The No.1 Bathing Beach in China

Considered as the largest sandy beach in Asia, the No.1 Bathing Beach is situated on Huiquan Bay in Qingdao, Shandong Province. The beach is an excellent one among all the bathing beaches here and is famous for its gentle slopes, thin sands, clear water, and calm waves.

The beach was first built in 1901 by the Germans after they invaded Qingdao. At that time, it was a famous entertainment place in East Asia but it was only open to foreigners. In 1984 and 2003, the local government repaired and expanded the place on a large scale. The beach took on a new look: it was enlarged and more public service facilities were constructed.

The unique beach, known for its slightly inclining stretches of fine-sand slopes and calm waters, is among the best of all bathing beaches in Qingdao. Because of the water waves'unrelenting work on the rocks around the bay, the rocks were reduced to fine sands. Over time they built up along the beach and eventually developed into a beach full of silver-colored sands. The 580-meter-long and 40-meter-wide beach stretches far into the sea. The waves that enter the bay lose their strength having been subdued by the shield of mountains around the bay. And a calm water area is thus formed with the gentle bay waves measuring only about one meter high.

The calm waters make it ideal for water-based activities. There are a total of 53 bathing compartments both on and under the ground of the beach. The bathing compartments above are partitioned by wood in a colonial German style, while the 2000-m2 compartments beneath are styled up with overhead windows for lighting. There is a large lounge room for swimmers, where refreshments are served. Other public services at the beach include information desks, shower rooms, public toilet and so on. No,1 Bathing Beach runs at a capacity of 200,000 swimmers.

At present, the beach covers an area of 3.6 hectares (8.9 acres) and is well equipped. Colorful chalets built in various shapes lead visitors into a fairytale world. More than 900 showers are provided. Restaurants, ballrooms, bars, cafes and temporary chalets are all available. Emergency life-saving equipment has been improved. A security monitoring system covers the whole beach. Combined with the broadcasting, lighting and background music systems it ensures the security of visitors.

Surrounded on three sides by mountains, the beach is like the pearl of Huiquan Bay. The gentle slope and mild waves make the place a comfortable play area. Visitors can sunbathe here and swim near the coast, relaxing by playing volleyball or running on the sand and even dining on the beach. The region's comfortable weather makes it a good choice to avoid the summer heat. Even in winter this place is crowded with keen swimmer.

The Gorgeous Butterfly Spring in Dali

These multi-colored butterflies fly around the spring and settle on the tree in great clusters as they sip the nectar from its blooms. The vast numbers of butterflies are hardly distinguishable from the flowers as the whole tree pulsates with every color of the rainbow. The magnificent sight is call "Party for Butterflies."

Travel some 27 kilometers south of Dali and you will come to a popular beauty spot known locally as the "Butterfly Spring." Situated at the foot of Mt. Shenmoshan, the first of the peaks of Mt. Cangshan, the spring rises to form a square shaped pool that is shaded by the dense foliage that lines its banks. The pool is some 50 square meters overall and above it is an ancient decumbent tree.

This is the famous "Butterfly Tree," so called as in the short interval as spring turns to summer, its fragrant blossom attracts thousands of butterflies. Thousands of butterflies fly here from all directions. Some of the butterflies are as big as a palm, and some are as small as a copper coin. The butterflies are of different colors: yellow, red, white, and so on. These multi-colored creatures fly around the spring and settle on the tree in great clusters as they sip the nectar from its blooms. The vast numbers of butterflies are hardly distinguishable from the flowers as the whole tree pulsates with every color of the rainbow. The sight is so magnificent and wonderful that people call it the "Party for Butterflies."

The romantic spectacle of the butterflies as they feed and mate in such abundance has become a symbol of courtship and each Bai youth will seek to engage with the love of his life by joining in with the traditional antiphonal singing. The Bai also refer to the spring as the 'Allegiance Spring' as it is here that true and lasting love may be found.

There is a lengend Says Long, long ago, when the Spring was still called the Pool without Bottom a father and his daughter lived by the pool. The daughter's name was Wen Gu. She was clever and beautiful just like a golden flower. She grew up, and fell in love with the hunter Xia Lang however Wen Gu was taken by a black-hearted landholder. Xia Lang came back from hunting and went all to find her. The land holder's solders were sent to chase them and they were pursued relentlessly until they and finally jumped into the Pool without Bottom.

At that very moment, there was lightening and loud thunder in the sky, a violent storm came. When the sun shone again after the storm, a pair of extremely beautiful butterflies flew out from the pool. They were followed by numerous small butterflies. The date was April, 15th in the lunar calendar. From then on, on this day of every year, thousands of beautiful butterflies would gather here and tell the moving love story. This how the Party of Butterfly got its name.

Note: You can reach the Butterfly Spring by special cars that run from the bus stations and hotels in the city. The spring is quite near to Zhou Town, which is the largest of the Bai Ethnic communities and was once the imperial garden of the Dali .Kingdom. Here too you can learn more of the Bai culture and visit some truly wonderful ancient buildings.
